January 28, 2008 Meeting

Guests

David Munson, who is very involved with the Boy Scouts and the Special Olympics, was a guest of Jim McCartney.

The Noon News

Nicholas reported on a animal rights effort to replace Punxsutawney Phil with a robot stand-in on groundhogs day. But it's not going to happen since he is treated better than the average child in PA.

And did you know that "rubberneck" is really not meant to describe a gawker, but a husband who rubs his wife's neck. More stuff like this from roving reporter Chuck Reifsnyder.

 Announcements

Carla Johnston: March 4th will be "Bring a Friend to Lunch" day. So find a friend or two to bring to lunch that day and show them what Kiwanis is all about. Guest speaker that day will be Peter Lark, General Manager of the Lansing Board of Water and Light..

Board of Directors meeting, Tuesday Feb 2, noon at Grumpys.

Bill Maher: Unsold Coupon Books need to be returned by next Thursday or we will be required to pay for them.

Larry Pingel recognized the January birthdays of Jo Grubbe on January 30 and Harold Krauss and John Roy Castillo on January 31. Larry related incidents that made the news on these dates since 1955 when Harold became a Kiwanian.

Songs

Bill Maher led the singing today starting with "Boost Kiwanis" and then with the wind chill outside at 9 below zero he selected "In the Good Old Summertime."

Happy Bucks

Bob Nelson, I have one for Miller Perry whose pictured appeared in the Town Courier along with some other people considerably younger. I will pass the paper around.

Norm Miller, I heard from Ev Beemer who sends a happy buck for all his Kiwanis friends from sunny Florida and another for Nicholas who he describes as a fine young man. I don't have change for this five, so another 3 happy bucks for Nicholas who will not only be missed by the Club but my wife is going to miss his reliable weather reports.

Jim McCartney, I have a happy buck for the Boy Scouts 100th anniversary and the cake our caterer has provided to celebrate it. I have 4 happy bucks for the 4 outstanding speakers I have been able to present in January.

Lance Lynch, I have a happy buck for my wife Karol who decided Wednesday of last week to take her sister and one of my son's to the new casino near Battle Creek. About noon I received a call from my son saying, "Dad, don't get excited but I need Mom's social security number... she just won $9,000." By Thursday night she had given it all away.

John Roy Castillo, a happy buck for the woman in Houston who was charged with manslaughter for shooting a man 6 times after he snatched her purse. When asked by the Judge why she shot the man 6 times she replied "Because when I pulled the trigger the seventh time it only went click."

Trina Pulver, I have 5 happy bucks for Nicholas who I hate to see leaving, for the hot dogs we had today and also for a new campaign we have going on at Comerica. If you need anything for your business or know any of your friends who do, give me a call.

Bob Holden, I have a happy buck for our speaker Bruce McCrea and David Munson for the great work they do with the Boy Scouts.

Program

Jim McCartney introduced Bruce McCrea, the last of his interesting January speakers. Mr. McCrea is a retired LCC Economics Professor and has been involved with the Boy Scouts of America most of his live. He has visited more than 20 countries with his Boy Scout troops and spoke to us today about the Michigan International Camporee at the Northwood's Scout Reservation. Visit their website at: http://www.micamporee.org/

Pot Winner

Mr. Dick Skinner was today's Pot winner. No joker this week, he drew a 10 of spades.
