February 4, 2010 Meeting

Guests

John Roy Castillo’s guest today was Bob Vogel, Director of employment and training at the Cristo Rey Community Center.

Also visiting today was an inter-club, 3 members from the Charlotte Kiwanis Club

In attendance was one of our new members Trina Pulver as well as Bryan Crenshaw who will become a new member very soon.

The Noon News

Nicholas was back today with celebrity birthdays, the story of the gentleman caught using a manikin for his "plus one" in the high occupancy lane of a New York street and a forecast, just as the groundhog predicted, more winter weather.

 Announcements

Carla Johnston: The minutes from last Tuesday’s Board meeting are on the tables for your information.

We do not have program chairmen for May, June and July. In an effort to get these months filled I am going to pass around a sign-up sheet asking you each to take one week in these months. We are not asking you to take the entire month, just a week.

I would like to recognize Lou Leitz, whose picture is in the Builder this month delivering dictionaries at Reo School. The picture was submitted by his partner Bob Nelson.

If anyone has not signed up for their golf shirt, please do so. See Bob Holden.

On Friday evening March 12 there is a Spring Divisional meeting and awards dinner at MSU’s Kellogg Center. Last year it was at Hawk Hollow and several of our members attended. Let’s have a good representation at this meeting as well. We will have a sign-up sheet as the date gets closer.

The Board approved the membership application of Bryan Crenshaw and we will be inducting him soon. The Board regretfully accepted Nicholas’ resignation.

Keep in mind March 4th is bring a friend to lunch day. Get your friend lined up for this.

Lou Leitz: The Grand Ledge Kiwanis Club is holding a fund raiser at the A & W on West Saginaw on Monday Feb 22, from 11:00am until 8:00pm. The Club gets $2 for each meal sold. This project is to provide a thesaurus to every 5th grader. We may want to make this a February inter-club instead of the one scheduled at Holt on Feb 15. We will discuss this next week.

Bob Nelson: Next week at 11:30am we will be having a combined meeting of the Youth Services Committee and the Publicity Committee. Also the rummage sale will be on Mar 19th and 20th at the same location as last year.

I have discussed with John Roy our plans to visit the Cristo Rey Community Center for one of our regular meetings in April.

Yvonne Groak: I would like to have a meeting of the Community Services Committee here next Thursday at 11:15am.

Nicholas Ferreri: I was at the Key Club meeting at Eastern yesterday and we awarded our latest member of the month. They have lots of projects going and are a fun group. By the way Rob Haney has expressed an interest in working with this group after I leave.

Songs

Jim McCartney led the singing again, this week. "The Yellow Rose of Texas" and "Smile."

Elaine from Charlotte assisted him at the piano.

Happy Bucks

Jim McCartney, a happy buck for my wife who had a successful shoulder replacement on Monday. As a loving husband I found there is a lot of work to be done at the house and a third one for the Charlotte inter-club and their talented piano player.

Carla Johnston, I have a happy buck for the Charlotte Club, always happy to see you.

Bill Maher, I have a happy buck for our speaker today, John Roy Castillo, who is going to enlighten us on the Cristo Rey Community Center.

Bryan Crenshaw, a happy buck for my nephew who plays on the Holt basketball team. They beat Grand Ledge last week and are hoping for a win against East Lansing today.

Greg Hagbom, a happy buck for Nicholas, we enjoyed having you as a member, you dropped our average age.

Jo Grubbe, I have a happy buck for Nicholas and I want him to make sure his replacement joins this Club. We need a weatherman.

Dick Skinner, I have an unhappy buck for Nicholas leaving. I have another copy of your picture Lou and you can have it for a buck.

Gary Brya, I have a happy buck for Nicholas, sorry to see him moving on. He made my grandchildren real happy when he brought snow at Christmas time.

John Roy Castillo, A happy buck for Nicholas, I applied for his job… I didn’t get it but they did ask me to speak here today.

Jim Dalton, a happy buck for Nicholas and another for an additional event. We got a call from the Trippers group and they want us to do a third Texas Hold ‘em this year. So we have June 28-30, Oct 25-27 and Dec 13-15. Mark your calendars.

Bob Nelson, I have a happy buck for Bob Vogel an old friend and for Nicholas. I saw Al Bard a member here although he hasn’t been here in years.

Lou Leitz, I have a happy buck for Bob Nelson and a his new appointment with the Public Service Commission and for his winning short story.

Terry Holzhausen, I would like to contribute to the Nicholas fund.

Program

Bill Maher introduced his first February speaker, our own John Roy Castillo. John is Executive Director of the Cristo Rey Community Center and again thanked the Club for contributing to the purchase of their ultrasound machine. He discussed many of the centers programs as well as interesting statistics on the Hispanic community.

Pot Winner

Terry Holzhausen was the winner today. Terry drew a 2 of hearts.
