July 1, 2010 Meeting

Guests

Allen Lopez was a guest of John Roy Castillo. Allen works with John at the Cristo Rey Community Center and today was his photographer.

Noon News

Dan Barnes with all the news as only he can report it, today news of baby diapers that look like jeans and the discovery of some Russian spy’s. Weather for the holiday weekend, sunny and warm.

 Announcements

Dick Skinner: Our Committee has been working on this project for the last four months and today I am happy to present this check for $1,200 to John Roy Castillo and the Cristo Rey Community Center. John commented their old ice maker died and the money will be used for a new one. It will be used with the senior citizen programs and will be a real asset with the hot weather coming up. On behalf of Cristo Rey, thanks a million. We will have a plaque indicating it was donated by the Kiwanis Club.

Harry Kost: I have sign-up sheets on the tables for the Johnny Cash show at Turkeyville on Friday, July 30. Sign up if you can, the dinner is at 6:00pm with the show following.

Larry Pingel: I found out there are 55 seats on the bus going to the Tiger game on Aug 21. We have 48 reservations so we have room for 7 more. If you have anyone else that would like to go let me know.

Jim Dalton: I want to thank everyone who was part of a pretty successful event at Trippers this week. I don’t have the numbers yet but it appears we did well. Thanks to Glenn Mulder, Ray Easton, Bob Holden and Jo Grubbe for helping out when we were short handed.

We have two more fund raisers scheduled at Trippers this year. They are on October 25, 26 & 27 and December 13, 14 & 15. Join the fun.

Carla Johnston: As you know Sue and I just got back from the Kiwanis convention in Las Vegas. While we were there we of course concentrated full time on Kiwanis. They announced the program to help eliminate MNT, maternal and neonatal tetanus which effects 60,000 babies every year. More to come about this. Several were several interesting speakers including Colon Powell.

The Board of Directors will meet on Tuesday, July 6 at noon at Grumpys.

Songs

Roger Grove leading the songs again, this week "Grand Old Flag" and "Smile." We do miss Clyde’s piano.

Happy Bucks

Carla Johnston, happy bucks for my new grandson born in Texas while I was in Las Vegas and of course the trip to Las Vegas. It was fun to represent our Club.

Ray Easton, a happy buck to be here 2 weeks in a row.

Dick Skinner, I have a happy buck for John Roy Castillo and the things he does at Cristo Rey.

Jim Dalton, a happy buck for the successful event at Tripper’s and another for John Roy and all the good he does at Cristo Rey. The trip we took there last spring was a real eye-opener.

John Roy Castillo, a happy buck for the Kiwanis Club and your support of Cristo Rey. We will be doing a press release on your donation for the ice machine and we will also have it on our website. It should be on there soon with pictures.

Roger Grove, a happy buck for the 41 I had on the MSU West course… not bad for an old guy.

Gary Brya, a happy buck for being late as the greeter today. I was playing golf and had to stay for the money as our team was 6 under and we had a bogie on the last hole. As you all know I choose good players.

Bill Fluke, a couple of happy bucks. I went on the memorial ride for Vietnam veterans to Washington DC. There was a marine who stood for more than 3 hours at the fallen soldier salute as all the bikes passed. The other buck is for the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and all they go through to prepare for this duty. Check it out on YouTube.

Sue Devon, a happy buck for the trip to Las Vegas, it was an honor to represent our Club, we learned a lot, had a lot of fun… and what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Trina Pulver, a happy buck for my experience at Tripper’s and another for our speaker today, I am sure you will enjoy her.

Rob Haney, a happy buck for our speaker and an apology dollar, somehow I had on my calendar I was working at Tripper’s tonight.

Clarence Smith, a happy buck for our speaker Sarah Davis who I worked with at the Boy Scout office and for the Cristo Rey Community, they really do great work.

Ricci Librizzi, a buck for this shirt I bought… which I think had the name misspelled.

Program

Rob Haney, program chairman for July, introduced today’s speaker Sarah Davis. Ms Davis is Director of Development for Operation Homefront of Michigan, an organization that supports service families around the world providing assistance, food, household goods to families in need.

Pot Winner

Harry Kost was today’s winner. No joker this week.
