Meeting
Guests
Dennis Murchison was a guest
again today of Clarence Smith. Dennis has done many presentations for the
Key Leader Program with more scheduled.
Terry Link, from the Lansing Food
Bank, was a guest today of Yvonne Groak.
On behalf of the Community
Services Committee and our Club Yvonne presented Mr. Link, Executive
Director of the Greater Lansing Food Bank, with a check for $1,000. With the
current economic conditions their needs have been growing and he was very
appreciative of our support.
Announcements
Bill Maher: On the
tables are sign-up sheets for next year committee members. Indicate on which
committee’s you would like to serve or chair.
Nicholas:
Joe Lubic sent me a picture of
some members of his Key Club who were volunteering at the Safety Patrol
Picnic.
Last week
my number 4 spot on the attendance card paid off… I won. I felt a few pangs
of guilt having won all that money and I remembered a malaria prevention
program which I became aware of at the convention in Nashville. I donated
the money to buy mosquito nets for a family in Africa.
Clarence Smith: We
have an excellent opportunity to get a lot of exposure for Kiwanis at no
expense to our Club at the Lansing 150 LaborFest on Sept 5. As you know
there will be 3 tents with activities and crafts for children of various
ages. We will be doing this along with the South Lansing and Delta Township
Clubs.
We will work in shifts, you don’t
have to be there the entire day. Nothing difficult, anyone can do it. There
are sheets on the tables to sign up for a shift. Everyone should
participate! The City is providing the tents and a budget for the expenses.
We will have Kiwanis banners outside the tents for everyone to see. Let’s
take advantage of this opportunity.
Dick Skinner: The
Spiritual Aims Committee will meet on Wednesday, July 22, at the
Flapjack Restaurant on Waverly Road at 7:30am.
From Larry Pingel:
Scheduled to serve lunch at the City Mission on Monday, July 20:
Gary Brya, Jo Grubbe, Clarence
Smith and Norm Miller.
The Noon News with
Nicholas Ferreri
I have not heard from the Regis
and Kelly contest but I would like to thank all of you who took the time to
vote for me. I am very appreciative.
Some stories today of some
inappropriate behavior and also a happy ending for a missing toddler who was
found in a drawer under the washing machine. She told her parents she was
sorry and hide and seek is now banned at that house.
Cool weather for the weekend.
Songs
Roger Grove again with "Boost
Kiwanis" and of course "Smile."
July Birthdays
Yvonne Groak again
recognizing birth days, this month Bob Nelson on July 17th and
Dick Skinner on July 23rd. Dick was present and was happy to
inform us he is again driving and his wife no longer has to chauffer
drive him to his appointments.
Happy Bucks
Greg Hagbom, my happy buck is
for my 1973 football team captain at MSU John Shinsky.
Dick Skinner, a happy buck to
be driving again and I am sure Rod Conrad and a few others are as well.
Sue Devon, a happy buck for
our company picnic today… a beautiful day and should be a lot of fun.
Ev Beemer, a happy buck for
my good friend John Shinsky and congratulations for his successful orphanage
project.
Dennis Murchison, a happy
buck to be here for the second time in the last couple of months.
Chuck Reifsnyder, my happy
buck is for my friend John Shinsky another cancer survivor.
Roger Grove, I have a happy
buck, the only one I have left after having my roof done.
Pot Winner
Gary Brya, July program chairman,
introduced today’s speaker John Shinsky. John is an Associate Professor at
Grand Valley State University and was captain of the MSU football team in
the early 1970’s. He was an orphan, and is the driving force behind a new
orphanage being build in Matamoros, Mexico. He was one of three who rode
bicycles from Lansing to Mexico last September to raise money for this
project. If you would like to know more about John, google his name
and you will get several hundred results.
Pot Winner
A rare occasion for Yvonne Groak
who won the Pot today. Her draw, a 2 of clubs.
