August
20, 2009 Meeting
Announcements
Bob
Holden: A sign-up sheet is being circulated for next year's
monthly program chairmen. November, December and January are open and I hope
we can get them filled quickly.
Bill
Maher: It will soon be time for a reprinting of the Roster Book.
If your personal information has changed or is incorrect indicate this on
the sheet being passed around.
Larry
Pingel: As you know this year we are serving lunch the third
Monday of every month at the City Rescue Mission. I brought the sign-up
sheet with me today and am happy to report all slots are filled for the rest
of the year.
Jim
Dalton: We only have one shift assignment left to fill for our
Texas Hold 'Em nights, Aug 31, Sep 1 and Sep 2 at Trippers. I have sign-up
sheets on the tables, if you can fill in the open slot on Tuesday, Sep 1,
11:30am to 7:30pm I would appreciate it. For those of you who have signed
up, I will be providing you with the schedule and a copy of the rules you
should be familiar with. Under the State rules only sponsoring charities can
sell chips or collect money so our involvement will be that and paperwork.
Those signing up should be there 1/2 hour before their shift for
instructions from the gentleman who runs the room. This should be easy duty
compared to our previous Las Vegas Nights. Sign up if you can and I thank
you all.
Dennis
Churchill: Next Tuesday, Aug 25, the Spiritual Aims Committee
will meet at the Flapjack Restaurant on Waverly Road at 7:30am. I hope to
see all committee members there.
Clarence
Smith: Sam's Club
has offered Kiwanis members a $10 gift card if they become a Sam's Club
member or renew their current membership by Sep 6th. Sheets with details are
on the tables.
Jo Grubbe
and I
attended the 150 LaborFest meeting yesterday
and I am happy to announce everything is shaping up nicely, our scheduling
and all the activities are in place. There will be chairs and tables
available, you do not have to stand up and it should be a lot of fun. A
Kiwanis sign that Jeff Lorencen made really looks great and we should get
some good exposure for Kiwanis.
The Noon
News
Walter
Kronkite is gone and of course we miss Nicholas when he can't be here, but
don't fret we still have another seasoned reporter available, Ray Easton.
Ray brought us news items today from around the world including Berlin where
Caster Semenya, from
South Africa, easily
set a record in the women's 800 meter race. Her father denies the rumor she
is not a woman.
August
Birthdays
Yvonne
Groak, who never forgets a birthday, recognized the August birthday's of
Dennis Churchill and Terry Holzhausen both of whom were born on the same day
in 19__.
Songs
Lot's of
pretty music with Bill Maher leading, Clyde at the piano and "Take Me Down
to Kiwanis" and "Old McDonald Had a Farm."
Happy
Bucks
Larry
Pingel, a happy buck for everyone who signed up to serve at the Mission
and another for the Tigers who have won 5 of their last 10 games and are
still in 1st place in their division.
Jim
Dalton, my happy buck for all who are stepping up to help at our Texas
Hold 'Em days coming up. Two other charities will be involved so I suggest
you wear your Kiwanis shirts so we stand out a little bit for other than our
natural charm. If you are not scheduled for a shift you are welcome to show
up and observe or help in any way you can.
Harry Kost,
we have a lady at the Golden K who knits caps for girls at Head Start.
She has run out of yarn, if you can help with some yarn we would appreciate
it.
Dick
Skinner, a happy buck for out speaker Robert Roach and a happy buck to
be able to help Rod Conrad at the Senior Center bingo party last night.
Ray
Easton, a happy buck to be here and for the cottage I bought on a lake
about a quarter of a mile from Rod Conrad. Oh, and a happy buck for our 43rd
anniversary. Congratulations Jackie and Ray!
Gary Brya,
a happy buck for our daughter-in-law and son Mike who, after 2 girls,
had their first boy last Thursday.
Terry
Holzhausen, a happy buck for our 40th wedding anniversary which we
celebrated last week. And congratulations to Kate and Terry!
Sue Devon,
a happy buck for the first offer on our Howell area house since we put
it up for sale 6 months ago.
Rod
Conrad, a happy buck for Dick's help last night at senior bingo. We have
been doing it for a long long time.
Program
Richard
Skinner, program chairman for the week, introduced today's speaker, Robert
Roach.
Mr. Roach,
a communications consultant, discussed his efforts to make the use of
alternative energy a cost effective solution to environmental concerns.
