September 3, 2009 Meeting
Guests
The
Salvation Army's Captain Alex Norton was a guest today. Capt. Norton is
responsible for the facility on Jolly Road. He is currently a member of the
Kiwanis Club in DeKalb, Il., and will be transferring his membership to
Lansing. Welcome Captain Norton!
Announcements
Carla
Johnston: I received an email from the South Lansing Club
inviting us to a Division meeting on Sept 17, 7:00pm at Grumpy's. This will
be an opportunity for an inter-club.
Jo Grubbe:
We completed our 3 days of sponsorship at Trippers Texas Hold 'em
yesterday. Monday's total was $1,674, Tuesday $850 and Wednesday $1,640. The
expenses have to come out of that. It went well and a lot less work than our
Las Vegas Night's.
Jim
Dalton: I think we made some money, I will have a pretty good
idea by the end of the meeting. We had a lot of good help and some
interested observers yesterday afternoon. It turned out to be easier than we
thought and I would like to thank all those who participated.
Bob
Holden: We are having trouble getting the monthly program chair
schedule filled. We especially need to get November and December filled. I
am going to pass the sign-up sheet again.
Clarence
Smith: Jo Grubbe was able to get an article in the LSJ about our
recent $1,000 donation to the Food Bank. I will pass it around in case you
haven't seen it.
We are all
invited to a installation of officers dinner at Grumpy's on Friday evening
Sept 25 at 6:00pm. Dinner is $16 per person, let Bill Maher know if you plan
to attend.
Nicholas
Ferreri and the Noon News
News of
the gentleman in Florida who found a frog in his Diet Pepsi, and from field
reporter Bob Nelson, the story of the man who had trouble getting police to
respond to a burglary in his shed until he told the 911 operator he shot the
guy.
Songs
Roger
Grove was the song leader again today with "Hail Hail the Gangs All Here"
and "On Kiwanis."
Happy
Bucks
Roger
Grove, I have a happy buck for the total right knee replacement I had on
August 10. I started driving again Monday and my wife no longer has to drive
me around.
Ray
Easton, a happy buck for a new index, the MUI, Men's Underwear Index. It
seems when the economy is bad men stop buying underwear when it improves
they start buying underwear and in the middle they turn it inside out.
Harry Kost,
a happy buck to have Alex joining us and another for my Kiwanis sponsor
many years ago Bob Zuker. You may have noticed in the paper this morning Bob
and his wife are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. Next Sunday
Phyllis and I are taking the train to California for 3 weeks.
Jim Kost,
I have a happy buck to have Alex with us, another for MSU, another for a
trip to France and Italy this summer. We have the 3 kids back to college and
I am happy to be back at Kiwanis.
Dennis
Churchill, a happy buck for 4 beautiful days at the Grand Hotel last
weekend and another for this weekend when we will be at the Bellagio in Las
Vegas.
Larry
Pingel, a happy buck for Jim Dalton for organizing our participation in
Tripper's Texas Hold 'em and another for the Lansing 150 LaborFest this
weekend.
John Roy
Castillo, a happy buck for the Cristo Rey Golf Outing at the Brookshire
Golf Club on Friday, Sept 11. To register call 372-4700. Another happy buck
for my story pointing out a generation gap.
Jim
Dalton, I have a happy buck for Roger Donaldson, Glenn Mulder, Jo Grubbe,
Jeff Lorencin, Bob Holden, Sue Devon, Bob Nelson, Norm Miller, Gary Brya,
Lou Leitz, Bill Maher and Larry Pingel for working Texas Hold 'em.
Jim
McCartney, my happy buck for $1,440 worth of chips I sold on Monday
night.
Jo Grubbe,
a happy buck for an opportunity to chat with Jeff Lorencin when we had
some down time Monday night. I was surprised how easy it was to work this
event.
Bob
Holden, a happy buck for Jim Dalton. He wore a path between his office
and Trippers and did a great job organizing this fundraiser.
Clarence
Smith, I have to add my happy buck for Jim as well.
Bill
Maher, a happy buck for a golf game with Harry Kost on Tuesday. I hope I
can play as well as he does when I get in my 90's. (That's what he said
Harry.)
