January 8, 2009 Meeting
Guests
Jennifer Whiting was a
guest today of Larry Pingel. Jennifer formerly worked in Larry’s office
and is interested in Kiwanis.
Bill Cohen was a guest
of Dick Skinner. Bill moved back to Michigan after retiring
from the Florida State Police.
Announcements
Roger Grove: I will be leaving for Palm Springs next Wednesday, returning May 1st.
In the meantime I will be having a birthday, so I have here my $77 check. I am honestly going to miss
Kiwanis as I don’t often get to visit a Club in California.
Larry Pingel: As you know we have volunteered to serve lunches at
the City Rescue Mission on the third Monday of each month. I have a sign-up sheet going around… select
the month(s) of your choice.
Jo Grubbe: We have decided on the last week of the months having
five Thursdays, we will have no speaker but have a “planning,” “how are we
doing,” “what are we doing” type meeting.
This will keep all the members aware of what we are doing and planning.
Clarence Smith: We had the monthly Board meeting on Tuesday. Secretary Bill Maher is not here today but we
will have the minutes next week. It was
a productive meeting with a lot of ideas discussed such as what we are going to
be doing with the Lansing
sesquicentennial.
Songs
Roger
Grove, our departing
song leader, with Clyde at the piano… “Grand Old Flag,” and “On Kiwanis.”
Happy Bucks
Dennis Churchill, a happy buck to see Dick Skinner back after
his illness.
Gary Brya, a happy buck to be heading south next week. I will be gone until April 15th
except for a couple of weeks in February.
Roger Grove, a happy buck after visiting my urologist on Monday. He was gentle, gave me a good report, my PSA
is headed down.
Dick Skinner, a happy buck for all your phone calls and concerns
after spending 10 days in the hospital.
I had a seizure but I am feeling better, my energy level is coming
back. They took my drivers license away
but I am working part time.
Terry Holzhausen, I have a couple of happy bucks, I am not going south and might go north
for a couple of weeks and a second buck for the Obama news networks who have more spare time now and can devote more to
Hamas.
Larry Pingel, a couple happy bucks, one for my guest Jennifer and the other for the
best part of being a grandfather. I baby
sat with my granddaughter last week who started crying at 9:00pm. The best part was I could give her back to
her parents when they came home at mid-night.
Jeff Lorencen, a happy buck for Dick, glad you’re back and believe it or not looking
forward to hearing more of your stories.
Jim McCartney, a happy buck for our beautiful new great granddaughter who we saw
recently in North Carolina.
Roger Grove, I have another happy buck for our granddaughter Jennifer who visited us for
a few days while her parents went skiing.
My wife was at the window waiting for her to arrive and then a few days
later was at the window waiting for her parents to
pick her up.
Clarence Smith, I have a happy buck to see Dick back.
It’s never the same without him, we wish him well.
Program
Dick Skinner, program chairman for the day,
introduced his speaker and neighbor Jerry Roe.
Mr. Roe is a Michigan Historian and served on
the Michigan Historical Commission for 20 years as well as other historical
commissions and organizations. He also
teaches political science at Lansing
Community College and is
a former member of the Lansing Kiwanis Club. His subject today was Michigan
Governor burial sites. He has visited
each one of them and today related many stories about them, in a very
interesting, entertaining and humorous half hour.
Pot Winner
Rod Conrad drew a six after winning today’s
pot.
If you do not have the time to do it right,
when will
you find the time to do it over?
