Jessica Yorko was a guest today. Jessica at one time served as President of the Hillsborough High School Key Club in Tampa, Florida and is interested in our Club. She is currently an advocate for making Lansing a safe Walk and Bike community. Currently, on average, someone in Lansing is hit while walking or bicycling every three days. Four area meetings are scheduled in March to promote this effort. See their website www.walkbikelansing.com for more detailed information on this initiative. We look forward to seeing Jessica back soon!

Announcements

Bob Nelson: On the tables are brochures announcing the 2009 Division 16 and 18 Spring Divisional Meeting to be held on April 3 at the Hawk Hollow Banquet Facility. I urge you all to come if you can, I know the Board will be sending representatives from our Club.

The next day, April 4, is the Kids Against Hunger food packaging event in Dewitt. Kiwanis in the Greater Lansing Area needs to raise $14,000 by the end of February to support this event and I hope you can consider a donation for this worthy effort. Every $10 will provide over 35 highly nutritious adult meals. Make checks payable to Michigan District of Kiwanis.

We also want to remind you of the Rummage Sale on Saturday, March 7, at the Faith United Methodist Church, 4301 S Waverly Road. The sale starts at 9:00am and items can be brought to the church on Thursday and Friday of that week from 11:00am to 4:00pm. It is only two weeks until the Sale so be rounding up your sale items. There are sign-up sheets on the tables for those that can help at the Rummage Sale.

Rick Librizzi: I understand we are honoring birthdays next week although we are having cake today. I will be here for that as I and my twin grandsons are having birthdays this month. I also have a check for the Kids Against Hunger, one dollar for each of the 20 members here today.

Nicholas again brought us the news items not available anywhere else, such as the pending merger of Hale Business Systems, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Fuller Brush, and W. R. Grace resulting in Hale Mary Fuller Grace Inc. The weather for the rest of the week and the weekend… cold and more snow.

Happy Bucks

Dennis Churchill, I have a happy buck after spending 3 ½ weeks visiting friends and family in sunny Florida and I also would be very pleased if Jessica decides to join our Club.

Jo Grubbe, I have a happy buck since I finished delivering dictionaries yesterday at the Seventh Day Adventist School. They are very pleased and look forward to getting the dictionaries each year. They only have 3 third graders but we were able to provide dictionaries to 4 new fourth graders who did not get dictionaries last year. The teacher is thinking he might want to become a Kiwanian.

Bob Nelson, I have a happy buck after getting back from sunnier Hawaii. I also wanted you to know Sue Devon, from the Board of Water and Light, who visited us recently will be joining our Club.

Program

Nicholas Ferreri introduced his speaker for the day Brad Walker. Mr. Walker is with WKAR and talked to us today about their Radio Talking Book program, a reading program for the visually impaired. Each day volunteers (Nicholas is one) read from daily and national newspapers, best selling novels as well as local area grocery and department store ads. Qualified listeners are provided radios that will receive the broadcast. More on their website www.wkar.org/radiotalkingbook .
