April 30, 2009 Meeting

Guests

Myron Miller, retired MSU Professor now living in Chapel Hill North Carolina, was a guest today of Roger Grove.

The Noon News with Nicholas Ferreri

Nicholas with his usual array of interesting stories and with Bob Nelson again providing an assist.  The soggy April weather will continue through Friday with some sun showing up on the weekend.

 Announcements

Bob Nelson: We are looking for volunteers to show up in Kiwanis shirts and caps to help at the Lansing 150 Parade on May 16th. If you can help let me know by next Monday.

Yvonne Groak:  I mentioned last week the Special Olympics of Michigan is looking for volunteers for their track and field competition at Michigan State University on Thursday, May 14. I have all the information here if you are interested.

Larry Pingel: We have all the spots filled to serve lunch at the City Rescue Mission for May and for June.  If you have signed up I will be reminding you by email.

Scheduled to serve lunch at the Mission on May 18th: Dick and Carolyn Skinner, Sue Devon, Jo Grubbe and Jim Kost.

Jo Grubbe: Since this is our last week meeting here, we will need some help in removing our banners and other Kiwanis materials after the meeting.

Clarence Smith: The Board of Directors will meet next Tuesday noon at Grumpie’s Restaurant, which is located at the corner of Pennsylvania and Mt. Hope.

Program

The program today was devoted to a discussion of Club programs and activities.

Clarence Smith made reference to the email he sent to all members indicating Cascarelli’s is closing and asking for members suggestions on where we might want to hold our meetings in the future.  Arrangements have been made to hold our meeting next week and possibly the May 14th meeting at the Salvation Army, 525 N Pennsylvania.  This will be number one on the agenda at the Board meeting next Tuesday.

Members commented on possible locations to hold our meetings and what they felt was an  acceptable amount for lunch.  The current lunch cost of $9, we have had for the last three years, may have to be increased.  There seemed to be consensus that a light meal, such as ‘soup and sandwich,” would be adequate for lunch rather than a full meal.

There was some discussion on the limited funding to support our projects this year as a result of discontinuing Las Vegas Night.  However it was noted we are scheduled to be the sponsoring charity for ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ at Trippers on Sept 1st and 2nd and also on Nov 23 and 24th.

Plans are being made to send letters to Lansing businesses soliciting members with a personal follow up.

Songs

We welcomed back Roger Grove from his winter vacation as he led the songs today with Clyde Flory at the piano. “Wait ‘Till the Sun Shines Nellie” “On Kiwanis” and “Smile.”

Pot Winner

Gil Hill won the pot today and then drew an ace of diamonds.
