July 24, 2008 Meeting

 Announcements

Bill Maher: I am pleased to announce all months for Program Chair next year have been filled.

Songs

With no piano and only a little humming from Roger G to get him started, Bill Maher led us in singing “Amazing Grace,” “Home on the Range” and “Smile.”

Happy Bucks

Rick Librizzi, I have an apologetic buck for coming to the meeting today only half dressed and I noticed our El Presidente is also dressed casually so Mr. President I am going to put in a buck for me and another for you.

Roger Grove, My happy buck is for our speaker Mr. Ken Boyer from Michigan State University.  He has only one slight blemish on his resume, one of his degrees is from that University to our east.

Bill Maher, I have a buck for a Skinnerism… about a guy trying to buy Polish sausage at a Home Depot.

Tom Renton, a happy buck (but neither my ears nor my recorder heard why).

John Roy Castillo, I have a happy buck and I think it may be my last one because Gary says

I am going to get my invoice soon.

Harry Kost, I have a happy buck because you finally asked me to play the piano.

Program

Roger Grove, program chairman for July, introduced today’s speaker Kenneth Boyer.

Mr. Boyer holds a PhD and is a Professor of Economics at Michigan State University.  His subject today was Michigan’s roads, pointing out that Michigan’s rural roads are in relatively good condition and urban streets are “terrible.”  He discussed how our roads compare to neighboring states as well as a comparison in funding.  The per gallon tax in Michigan is: Federal 18.5cents, State 18.5cents, State sales tax approximately 24cents for a total tax of 61cents.  The US average tax per gallon is 49.4 cents with California being the highest at 74.9 and Alaska being the lowest at 26.4

Pot Winner

Gary Brya won today’s pot and drew a nine.

In case you were wondering

On this day in 1701 Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac established Fort Ponchartrain for France at present-day Detroit.  He believed a post on the Detroit River would offer a better strategic position against the English than the frontier post at Mackinac.
