December 31, 2008 Meeting
Announcements
Rod Conrad: Dick Skinner
is suffering from a back problem and is now recuperating at home. Miller Perry
has left the assisted living facility and he also is now at home. We wish them both good health
in 2009.
Larry Pingel: This year we will have volunteered to serve lunches
at the City Rescue Mission, Michigan Ave and Cedar St, on the third Monday of each
month. We need three or four people each
month for this project from 12 noon to 1:00pm.
I will have a sign-up sheet next week.
Jo Grubbe: Would the program chairman each month give me a list
of the speakers you have scheduled so I can send them to the State
Journal. If you don’t have your schedule
completed, give me the weeks you have so I can get them in.
Bob Nelson: We have
finalized the location for the Division 16 Rummage Sale on March 7th
at the Faith United Methodist
Church, 4301 S Waverly. We
are raising money for the “Kids for Hunger” campaign so start collecting your
items such as household goods and clothing for this sale. The “Kids for Hunger” meal assembly will be
on Saturday, April 4th.
Clarence Smith: A reminder the Board of Directors meeting is here next
Tuesday, Jan 6.
Yvonne Groak: Today we honor those members having birthdays in December. They are Ev Beemer
(enjoying the sunny weather in Florida)
whose birthday was on the 9th, Greg Hagbom
on the 17th, Lou Leitz
also on the 17th and Lance Lynch
whose birthday was on Dec 29th.
Greg, at 55, expressed hope that 2009 will be kinder to his financial
planning business then was 2008. Lou, 91, joined Kiwanis in 1953, has 14 great
grandchildren and 2 more expected soon.
The Noon News with Nicholas Ferreri
Among the news items was the story
of a Vermont
man who accidentally threw out a lottery ticket he received for Christmas but
recovered it from the trash and found it was worth $650,000. Thanks Nicholas for a year of entertaining
“Noon News.”
Songs
Roger
Grove was the song
leader, Dr. Clyde at the piano. “Take Me
Down to Kiwanis,” Auld Lang Syne” and “Smile.”
Happy
Bucks
Bob Nelson, a happy buck for the Detroit Lions. You recall Larry gave a dollar for each game
the Tigers won and I said I would give $2 for each Lions win. They did me proud.
A second happy buck since we are leaving for the Florida
Keys on Saturday.
Jo
Grubbe, a
happy buck to wish everyone a Happy New Year and a hope the economy the economy
will be much improved.
Clyde
Flory, a
kind of a sad buck since a snowstorm prevented us from delivering dictionaries
on the last day of school before Christmas vacation. But a happy buck since we
had our whole family home for Christmas, all 12 of them.
Larry
Pingel, I
also have a happy buck to have had the family all home for Christmas. Another happy buck is for Nicholas who came
directly from work to deliver dictionaries with me and was still wearing his
studio make-up.
Chuck Reifsnyder, my happy buck is also to have the whole
family home for Christmas. My wife said
we were going to limit it to the 13 of us this year, but somehow we wound up
with 26.
Roger
Grove, a
happy buck for our Christmas, my wife and I were alone, the kids are scattered
all over. However we were invited out
for dinner on Christmas eve before attending Peoples Church and then we were invited out for
dinner again on Christmas day.
Marilyn said, “I never had it so good.”
Nicholas
Ferreri, a
happy buck for a Happy New Year for everybody.
Program
Bob Nelson, filling in as program chairman
for Dick Skinner, introduced today’s speaker Rick Jones. Mr. Jones is the state representative for
district 71, Eaton
County. He is the former
Sheriff of Eaton County and worked in the Sheriff’s office there for almost 30
years as well as being active in many community activities. He commented on legislation he has promoted
including current pending legislation allowing citizens to obtain a permit to
carry a taser.
Pot Winner
Roger Grove was today’s lucky
winner. Roger drew a two of hearts.
Then sing,
young hearts that are full of cheer,
With never a thought of sorrow;
The old goes out, but the glad new year
Comes merrily in tomorrow.
